On March 8, 1965 approximately 3,500 U.S. marines arrived at China Beach to defend the American air base in Da Nang. These soldiers join the already 23,000 military advisors that are already in Vietnam. The U.S. troops were sent over to defend the U.S. air base so that the South Vietnamese troops could be assigned to other tasks (such as fighting the Vietcong). The placement of these 3,500 soldiers in Vietnam marked the actual beginning of the Vietnam War and the U.S.'s involvement in the war.
